My car has a bad transmission fluid leak, I'm pretty sure the the transmission doesn't have many more miles left on it. It slips and hard shifts. But every time I check the fluid it always seems to be in the same spot on the dipstick, I check it with the engine running in park. From time to time I add transmission fluid anyways The first time I added some it seemed to help a lot but now there seems to be no change. What color should the fluid be in the car, when I check it's a light pink, but when I put it in it's dark red. Should I try to service the transmission or just let it die? It's a older car. Look on the dipstick sometimes it's printed on there. It should be a lightish red/ pinkish color. At that point the only service for that trans is replacement. But it depends how much you want to put into it. And would you rather have a car payment instead? Check in neutral or park with the engine running and fully warmed up on a level surface. Do not overfill it as that could hurt the transmission. Here's the scoop: I'm aware I am leaking an unknown amount of coolant. More than less though. Slight back story. Due to financial struggles... for about a month, I was putting water into my reservoir and my radiator cap, but only driving minimally (knowing I was having some radiator issues). So, I purchased some 50/50 coolant a couple days ago... and I went through a cycle of that. I just finished a short drive from my job to home, and arrived home just in time, THANK GOD, cause It was a close call. Hood was steaming slightly, but would've easily turned into a fire, if I drove another 2 miles, I bet. Turned off my car, popped the hood, and it was "hissing". The best way I can describe this... car is in decent shape, I must say, but not tip top. The location of the hissing and coolant spraying/hissing, was directly to the LEFT of the engine. Could it simply be a hose? It was kind of dark out, but even in the light, I could not see EXACTLY where the leak was coming from. If anybody can give me some suggestions... I'd greatly appreciate it. Maybe you can't tell me EXACTLY what the problem is, but I know dealing with car repairs can be expensive, so maybe a suggestion on how to act from here on out. Chevrolet . How to Diagnose Car Battery TroubleHaving trouble with your car battery? Don't stress it too much. Usually, a malfunctioning battery is fairly easy to diagnose, even for those with limited mechanical ability. If the problem exists only with the battery, the solution ranges from recharging to replacement. Ultimately, you can check the battery using a few simple tools that can be purchased any automotive supply store. Also, if necessary, you can replace the battery on your own, thus saving yourself an expensive trip to the mechanic. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Voltmeter Battery charger Post and terminal cleaning tool or small wire brush Distilled water (for standard-duty batteries only)Basic Battery Diagnostics Step by Step : 1 Turn off all of your vehicle's accessories, including radio and lights, and attempt to start the engine. If the engine sounds strong, but simply fails to fire, your battery is fine. Be careful, however, not to continue trying to start the car, as it will eventually drain the battery. If the engine sounds sluggish, slowly fades or does nothing at all, then chances are your battery is dead. 2 Turn your headlights on without trying to start the vehicle. Step outside and examine the headlights. If the lights are strong, your battery is charged. If, however, the lights are dim or not working, the trouble lies with your battery. 3 Open the hood on your vehicle and remove any shields from the battery. Then examine the battery. Specifically, look at the battery's terminals. Corroded or dirty terminals are sure to cause battery trouble. Use a post and terminal cleaning tool or small wire brush to clean the terminals. You may need to unhook the battery cables in order to do this properly. Also, make sure the battery cables are securely fastened to the posts. 4 Check the fluid level in the battery (for standard-duty batteries only). If you own a maintenance-free battery, simply skip this step. Pry the caps off the top of the battery and look into the cells. You should see plates within the battery, as well as fluid. Add distilled water to the cell if necessary. Add only enough distilled water to cover the plates (See Ref. 1). Use only distilled water, as tap water will promote corrosion. Using a Voltmeter to Diagnose Battery Troubles Step by Step : 1 Remove all guards that are covering your battery and double check to ensure your ignition switch and all accessories are turned off. 2 Check your voltmeter to ensure it's set to 12 volts (some voltmeters have multiple settings) and connect the positive probe to the battery's positive terminal. Then connect the negative probe to the negative terminal. Make sure the probes have a good connection to the battery. 3 Read the display on your voltmeter. A working battery with a full charge should display a reading of 12.5 to 12.8 volts (See Ref. 2). 4 Recharge your battery if you see a reading of 12.45 or lower. A reading of 12.45 indicates that your battery has only a 75-percent charge. If you see a reading of 12.24, your battery is less than 50-percent charged (See Ref. 3). Thus, your charging times will vary according to how badly your battery drained. If your battery drains again, without having been used in your vehicle, then it needs a replacement. Tips & Warnings Car batteries generally last 4 to 6 years. If you have a battery in this age-range, or older, your troubles are likely associated with age. In this case, simply install a new battery in your vehicle.

Your lights or radio should not be on, nor should you have any accessories, such as a cell phone or GPS, plugged into the vehicle's outlet. 2 Remove any plastic shields that may be covering your battery. You will need to have free access to the battery's positive and negative terminals in order to ascertain whether it is fully charged. 3 Connect the positive probe of your voltmeter to the positive terminal on your battery. The positive probe will, in most instances, be red or yellow. On your battery, the positive terminal is frequently identified with a plus sign. Some voltmeters have multiple settings. Check to make sure your voltmeter is set to 12 volts. 4 Connect your voltmeter's negative probe to the negative terminal on the battery. Your negative probe will be black in color. The negative terminal on the battery is identified with a minus sign. 5 Look at the display on your voltmeter. You should see a number in the 12.5 to 12.8 range. This indicates a battery that is fully charged. If you see a number less than 12.5, your battery is not sufficiently charged. A reading of 12.45 indicates a 75 percent charge. A readout of 12.24 equals 50 percent, while a reading of 11.89 translates to a fully depleted battery. Tips & Warnings If you don't have a voltmeter, you can do some simple tests to see if your battery has a full, or nearly full, charge. First, simply try to start the vehicle. If the engine turns over without struggling, your battery is likely charged. If it struggles or turns over very slowly, the battery is drained. Do not, however, continue to try to start your vehicle if the engine does not fire, as it could cause internal damage. Second, you can test your battery by leaving your vehicle off and turning on your headlights. Get out and look at the headlights. If they are shining brightly, your battery is most likely fully charged. If they are dim, the battery is drained.
